The Governor of the Bank of Israel, Moshe Sanbar, has joined the debate on the Israeli policy in the administered territories and took a dovish approach. Sanbar said in a television interview several days ago that the territories cost Israel about IL 150 million yearly. He was refuting the statement made earlier last week by Defense Minister Moshe Dayan who claimed that Israel was not losing any money because of the former Arab territories and that all expenses must be considered in light of the economic benefits.
Sanbar did not question the benefits. He mentioned the work force which comes to Israel from the West Bank and Gaza and “the help we have in accelerating the economic process in the country.” But, he added “we should not establish facts in the territory under our control which might hinder us in negotiating and signing a peace treaty when and if the opportunity may come.” Sanbar rejected Dayan’s proposal of building Yamit, a city south, of the Gaza Strip, or the establishment of industry by Israeli investments.
Israeli singer Esther Ofarim made a brilliant comeback in West Germany Sunday with a show in Frankfurt. The hall was under heavy police guard after threats on her life were received. The show, her first here in three years, was without incident.
