President Anwar Sadat of Egypt will meet with Yugoslav President Tito on Wednesday in Belgrade, a press spokesman from the Egyptian Mission to the UN said today. The spokesman declined to comment on speculation that Sadat is seeking Tito’s assistance as an intermediary between Cairo and Washington in Middle East peace negotiations.

The Yugoslav Embassy denied that Tito would assume such a role. Branislav Novakovic, press and cultural affairs counselor at the Embassy, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, There is no need for such an intermediary since the U.S. and Cairo already have contacts.” However, he said. “Tito has always been interested in finding a solution in the Middle East. He continues to maintain contacts along these lines with the U.S., Cairo and other countries.”
