Two members of the Jewish Defense League in Los Angeles have been convicted of assault charges stemming from the bombing last year of a Palestinian Arab’s home in Hollywood. Sentencing was set for June 28. Philip C. Zweig and Robert S. Manning, both 20, and members of the JDL chapter here, were found guilty of one count each of assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily harm.
The conviction followed a one-day, non-jury trial before Superior Court Judge Newell Barrett. Additionally, Manning was convicted of one count of illegal possession of fireworks. Deputy District Atty. Stephen Marks maintained they used gunpowder from firecrackers to make bombs. The pair was arrested after an explosion ripped through an apartment occupied by the family of Mohammed Shaath at 845 N. Harvard Blvd, last September.
Shaath, 27, was not at home and neither his wife, nor their two children were injured. Marks presented evidence that one of the defendants had fought with Shaath during a melee which had erupted on a local television talk show involving Jews and Arabs.
