Britain reiterated today its firm support for Resolution 242 without any alterations. Describing that document as “the first serious attempt by the international community since 1947 to tackle the roots of the Middle East problem,” the British delegate Kenneth D. Jamieson told the Security Council this afternoon that “It is in our view the duty of this Council to preserve that resolution intact.”
Jamieson said that his government also supported resumption of the Jarring peace mission and that it would be “glad to see an interim arrangement (between Israel and Egypt) come into effect on the one important condition that it would have to be, and be seen to be, a step toward an overall settlement in accordance with Security. Council Resolution 242 as well, of course, being acceptable to the parties.”
