The first Reform Jewish Day School has been established in Canada and will start operating by next year’s school term. Rabbi Gunther Plaut of Holy Blossom Temple, in Toronto, said the day school will not be the official project of the four Liberal congregations in the city. No financial aid will be sought from the synagogues as such. The school is described by Rabbi Plaut as “a private enterprise run and supported by Reform Jews, who, while they are loyal members of their own synagogues, wish to bring this new enterprise to fruition. The school will look for liaison with the Reform temples but it will not look for any other support.
Dr. Plaut also makes it clear that there is a Sizeable body of opinion within the Reform membership which still favors the public school supplemented by afternoon schools for Jewish training, though he personally supported the founding of a day school because he feels an alternative is needed in Reform Jewish education.
