The Security Council is expected to complete its debate on the Middle East situation Wednesday or Thursday after considering a three-nation draft resolution calling for the condemnation of Israel and the recognition of rights of the Palestinians, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency learned today.
The Egyptian-inspired draft was being worked on by Yugoslavia, India and Panama in hopes that it will be ready when the Council resumes the debate tomorrow morning. It is based on the proposal made Friday in the Council by Egyptian Minister Mohammed H. el-Zayyat that the Council “pronounce itself” against Israel’s occupation and for the principle of total withdrawal. Israeli officials in Jerusalem expressed distress yesterday that Panama, long a friend of Israel, was a sponsor of this measure.
Egypt has said it will not accept a watered-down resolution even if it is vetoed by the United States, sources said. The sources said that the U.S. and Australia may abstain in the voting on the measure. US. Ambassador John Scali told newsmen Friday that the U.S. would veto any “one-sided resolution.”
