I came to Europe without a fixed plan for a solution to the Middle East conflict but with the hope for imminent peace settlement,” United Nations Secretary General Kurt Waldheim said according to Austrian Foreign Ministry sources at the start of his four nation East European tour. Waldheim made a short stop yesterday in Vienna before continuing his journey to Hungary where he was scheduled to hold talks with leading Hungarian politicians on international problems, including the Middle East conflict.

Further stops of Waldheim’s East European tour are Prague, Sofia, and Bucharest later this week. The most important topic of Waldheim’s talks in East Europe will be the Mideast situation, diplomatic sources said. Waldheim planned to open his discussions with. Hungarian Communist Party leaders tomorrow. In a short statement at the airport, he expressed his hope that the talks would be a contribution to improve the international atmosphere, according to MTI, the Hungarian news agency.
