On the eve of the High Holy Days, the chairman of the Hungarian Jewish community has called on the community to “perpetuate the ancient Jewish traditions” and participate “in greater numbers” in the work of the community. In an editorial in the bi-monthly community paper, “Uj Elet” (New Life), the chairman evoked the years of persecution, then turned to the “brighter aspects of Jewish life today.” He noted, “We now enjoy equal rights with other religious communities,” and that “the agreement concluded 25 years ago with the Hungarian government has been fulfilled” There are presently 100,000 Jews in Hungary. “Uj Elet” has a circulation of 25,000.
The musical, “Fiddler on the Roof” is currently playing to packed houses in Budapest, a city, which doesn’t usually have many theater goers. With seats sold out weeks in advance, the play has been such a success that a record of it has been released with some of the best-known Hungarian singers. Mrs Meir’s Rosh Hashana Message:
