The U.S. governments is reviewing the commercial agreement it signed with Saudi Arabia in 1933 to determine whether King Faisal’s oil embargo against the U.S. is violating it. However, an early decision on the results of the review is unlikely. State Department spokesman Paul Hare, asked today about the possibility of violations of the 40-year-old agreement that gives Saudi Arabia most favored nation treatment, said that “of course we are reviewing” the agreement. “But quite frankly,” he added, “we don’t consider a discussion at this stage will materially contribute to our diplomatic efforts with respect to the Geneva peace conference or the oil embargo itself.”
