A heavy exchange of fire erupted on the Syrian front at noon today, ending after one hour with no casualties reported on the Israeli side. A military spokesman said the Syrians started the exchange with artillery and tank fire aimed at Israeli positions in the southern sector of the enclave captured by Israel in the Yom Kippur War. For the first time, the Syrians fired Katyusha rockets from mobile launchers in salvoes of 12-24 missiles. Israeli gunners claimed a direct hit on at least one Syrian tank. Earlier in the day, the Syrians fired several artillery and tank shells at Israeli positions in the southern part of the enclave but caused no casualties. Israeli forces did not return the fire.
