Richard W. Murphy, a career Foreign Service officer, was confirmed by the Senate today as the first United States Ambassador to Syria since 1967. Syria broke diplomatic relations with the U.S. during the Six-Day War. The resumption of diplomatic relations was announced by President Nixon and Syrian President Hafez Assad when they met in Damascus June 16. Murphy has been U.S. Ambassador to Mauritania since 1971.
