British Foreign Minister James Callaghan told the General Assembly today that the momentum of peace in the Middle East should be maintained, otherwise “stalemate is the surest guarantee of another war.” He said that a settlement will involve compromises but expressed confidence that an agreement “which would give peace, security and Justice to all the people of the area” can be achieved.

Callaghan declared that his country would support the next round of talks between the Middle East countries to achieve that goal. He said that his visit earlier this year to the Middle East convinced him that “we were in a period of opportunity for a settlement of this problem.”
