Thirty-four Arab and East European states have asked the UNESCO General Assembly to impose sanctions on Israel should it fail to abide by former UNESCO resolutions. The 34, which included the Soviet Union and China, claimed in their resolutions that Israel is changing the Jerusalem site and is conducting archaeological excavations on or near Moslem holy places. The resolutions claimed that UNESCO has in former years asked Israel to stop such activities. The new resolution, which will be discussed next Monday, calls for sanctions, namely, stopping all UNESCO technical and cultural assistance to the Jewish State.
