Army experts are investigating an explosion early this morning which ruptured the Eilat-Ashdod oil pipeline about 12 kilometers north of Eilat. The investigators are trying to determine whether the blast was an act of sabotage or an accident caused by excessive pressure on a weak section of the pipe. The explosion occurred shortly after 4 a.m. local time, sending oil gushing from the pipe. The oil covered a wide area, including a section of highway before the flow was shut off. Engineers said the pipeline would be reopened in a day or two.
