A United Nations spokesman said at the end of today’s meeting that Plaja might be able to announce when the Council will meet on the extension of the mandate which expires Thursday.

Secretary General Kurt Waldheim said through his spokesman today that he hopes “satisfactory arrangements” will be found for UNEF troops to stay in Sinai. Waldheim met with members of the Security Council and Israel and Egypt over the weekend. This morning he met with Plaja to discuss the situation in the Mideast.

UNEF’s future was also discussed today at a luncheon for Security Council members held at the Italian Mission here.
