A race relations board committee has ruled that the Gulf Oil Company – Middle East was guilty of unlawful discrimination withdrawing a job offer to a British non-Jewish woman who married a Jew. Mrs. Linda Friedburger complained to the board that her employment as private secretary to Gulf Oil Company Vice-Chairman E. F. Diebes fell through when the company learned that she was married to a Jew. She was represented at the committee hearings by veteran Jewish lawyer Victor Mishcon.
The conciliation committee of the race relations board is now trying to negotiate a settlement compensating to Mrs. Friedburger for the loss of the job. The oil company has hitherto claimed that in employing staff it made no distinctions between Jews and non-Jews.
