The Canadian Jewish Congress has sent a telegram to Canadian External Affairs Secretary Allan MacEachen praising Canada’s “courageous vote” in the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) last week. Canada was the only country to vote against two resolutions on racism adopted 40-1 by ECOSOC because it said it could not accept any link between Zionism and racism. The U.S. did not participate in the vote and eight West European nations abstained.

The telegram, signed by CJC president Sydney Harris and by the national director, Alan Rose, said that “Canada’s repudiation of attempts to link Zionism to racism will be welcomed by all Canadians. To stand alone in defense of an honorable position only enhances the stature of Canada amongst the nations.”
