The Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry charged today that Jewish prayer has been banned in the Moldavian town of Kalarash, following a raid on a morning minyan in a private home where services have been conducted since the synagogue was shut 15 years ago. Rabbi Steven Riskin, SSSJ’s chairman, said that the prayer shawls, phylacteries and prayerbooks of the worshippers, mainly older persons, were seized on the spot and despite protests have not been returned. The only answer from authorities was that they would “look into the issue.” he said.
