The president of the Security Council. Ambassador Piero Vinci of Italy, is scheduled to hold consultations with members of the Council on the request today by the Organization of African Unity (OAU) for a Security Council meeting on the “act of aggression” by Israel against Uganda. A date for the Council meeting will be decided after the consultations are completed between Vinci and the other members.
A spokesman of the Israel UN Mission told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that Israel will attend the Council debate. Israel boycotted the recent Security Council debate on the Palestinians, which ended last week with an American veto of an anti-Israel resolution.
The request for the meeting over the Israeli rescue operation in Uganda was contained in a telegram to Vinci from the Mauritius Prime Minister and OAU chairman Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. The telegram was relayed to Vinci by the OAU office in New York. “OAU heads of state and government request you to summon immediately the Security Council to consider this wanton act of aggression against a member state of the UN.” the telegram said. It charged that the Israeli action constituted a danger to international peace and security.
