Uzi Narkis, director general of the Jewish Agency’s immigration department, issued a written report this week to the World Zionist Organization Executive dealing with immigration to Israel in 1976 and the issue of Soviet Jewish drop-outs. The official translation of his statement on the drop-outs, reported in the Jan. 26 issue of the Bulletin, was that the Committee of Ten “has not yet reached its conclusion because of sharp disagreement among its members.”
This morning, Narkis’ office here stated that after rereading the translated statement on the drop-outs they came to the conclusion that there was a misunderstanding and that the phrase “sharp disagreements” should be deleted from the report by Narkis and retain only the reference to the fact that conclusions have not yet been reached by the Committee.
In addition, the Jan. 26 issue of the Bulletin also reported as part of the story on Narkis that the Committee concentrated mainly on the Jewish Agency’s demand that HIAS and the Joint Distribution Committee stop providing assistance to drop-outs. Attention was called here to the fact that the Agency at no stage officially demanded that HIAS and JDC stop aiding the drop-outs.
