The Committee for the Rescue of Syrian Jewry has called upon President Carter to raise the issue of the plight of Syrian Jewry when he meets with Syrian President Hafez Assad in Geneva May 9. In a telegram addressed to Carter, Abe Dwek, Committee president, declared: “The Syrian government maintains a total ban on Jewish emigration while non-Jewish Syrians are readily able to emigrate.” Dwek urged Carter to appeal to Assad “to permit these hapless people to emigrate to the United States.” Earlier this week in Paris, Jacob Tsur, president of the Israeli Council for Jews from Arab Countries, also appealed to Assad to improve the status of Syria’s Jewish population.
