Police have begun an investigation into charges of illegal election practices by Samuel Flatto-Sharon, the millionaire former French financier who was elected to the Knesset May 17 as a one-man faction. The complaint was lodged by Shulamit Aloni of the Civil Rights Party. The charges are based on information provided by Raphael Halperin, a former wrestling champion who had been one of Flatto’s supporters. Meanwhile, Flatto has appealed to the Jerusalem District Court to reverse a magistrate court’s decision not to return the IL 10 million bail he posted pending the outcome of extradition proceedings. The French government has requested Flatto’s extradition on charges of fraud and tax evasion. The matter has yet to reach the courts and a decision as to whether or not Flatto is extraditable will be made by the Justice Ministry.
