Prof. Benjamin Levich was questioned by the KGB for seven hours yesterday at Lefortovo Prison, according to reports reaching here from Moscow today. It was reported that the questioning focussed on his relationship with Anatoly Sharansky, the 29-year-old Jewish activist arrested last March and charged with treason. Levich, a leading physicist, was reported to have told his secret police interrogators that he knew Sharansky and was convinced that he was not guilty of any crime. But he refused to answer many questions, according to the reports.
Friends of Levich were quoted as saying that the KGB made no reference to any proceedings against him and did not indicate whether he would be summoned for questioning again. Levich, an associate member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, applied for an emigration visa five years ago and has been repeatedly refused.
