A memorial service for the 24 Soviet Jewish writers and poets murdered by the Stalin regime 25 years ago was attended by several hundred immigrants from the USSR and Israeli poets and writers. The event was sponsored by the B’nai B’rith Committee for Soviet Jewry, the Public Committee for Soviet Jewry and the Committee for the Memorial of the 24 Writers. Speakers included Aryeh Harel, who was Israel’s Ambassador to the Soviet Union at the time, and Shimon Markish, whose father Peretz Markish, a noted Yiddish writer, was one of the Jews killed on Aug. 12, 1952.
