Governor Hugh L. Carey announced that the Cemetery Board of New York State has issued a directive to all cemeteries in New York State with designated religious sections that they be available for grave openings and interments six days a week. Sunday through Friday, where immediate burial is required by religion.
This action by the Cemetery Board was taken at the request of the Governor’s office to investigate a number of complaints lodged with the Governor’s office by rabbinical organizations, and from families who were refused permission for burials on Sundays.
