Reports reaching Afghan Jews here indicate a crackdown by the new pro-Communist regime on the 30-odd Jewish families living in the country. Israel Radio reported this today, citing a letter recently received by Rabbi Moshe Naamat, an Afghan immigrant to Israel, from Jews living there. The letter spoke of “a tough winter,” which was interpreted as referring to restrictions imposed by the new authorities.

Apparently those Jews who wish to do so are no longer free to leave for Israel, the radio said. Afghan olim here have asked the Jewish Agency aliya chief Uzi Narkiss to try and help, and he has pledged to seek discreet contacts with the Afghan authorities.
