An MK of Likud’s Liberal Party wing said last night that Defense Minister Ezer Weizman has been maintaining regular communication with his Egyptian counterpart, Minister of War Abdel Gamassy. According to Pessah Grouper, speaking at a meeting of the Liberal Party’s Central Committee, Weizman and Gamassy speak by telephone every few days. He said it was the only direct contact between top level Israeli and Egyptian officials at the present time and expressed hope that it be allowed to continue.

Grouper, who supports Weizman’s position in his dispute with Premier Menachem Begin and Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan over the Cabinet’s reply to the American questions on the future of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, said there was no indication that the Defense Minister plans to resign. He said Weizman would continue to express his views at Cabinet meetings but if he found himself completely isolated, he would consider resignation.
