Dame Kathleen Kenyon, one of the Holy Land’s leading archaeologists, died today at the age of 72. She was best known for excavations which showed Jericho to be the world’s oldest city. In Jerusalem, where she was director of the British School of Archaeology in the 1960s, she uncovered the walls of the original Jebusite and early Israelite cities.
