The Conservative Movement is taking its first step to become officially affiliated with the Zionist movement. The newly formed Movement for the Reaffirmation of Conservative Zionism, MERCAZ, will hold its constitutional convention at the Jewish Theological Seminary Nov. 2.

The convention will adopt a platform and elect permanent officers. This will be followed “in due course” by a formal application for affiliation with the American Zionist Federation, according to Wolfe Kelman, executive vice-president of the Rabbinical Assembly. Kelman said it is hoped that similar groups will be established by Conservative Jews in Canada, Latin America, Israel and else-where. He added that he hoped the Israeli group would organize a political party and run candidates for the Knesset.
