The Foreign Ministry, in a surprise announcement late tonight, reversed a decision taken by a special ministerial committee earlier today where by Israel would have agreed to an enlarged United Nations Truce Supervisory Organization (UNTSO) force to police its withdrawal from Sinai. According to officials, the turn-about followed consultations with Premier Menachem Begin at Hadassah Hospital.
The Foreign Ministry said in its announcement that the U.S. government has been informed of the decision to reject an UNTSO force. It was reportedly made at a meeting between Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan and Deputy Premier Yigael Yadin and top aides following their visit to Begin. Yadin had chaired the ministerial committee which endorsed the UNTSO proposal, reportedly worked out between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, to replace the United Nations Emergency Force.
