A group called the American Friends of the Hall of Heroism (Hechal Hagvurah) has been formed to “support, preserve and expand” this little known museum located in the Russian Compound in the heart of Jerusalem, it was announced here by Eugene Singer, chairman of the American Friends. The museum is the former Jerusalem Central Prison which was a detention center for the Irgun and Lechi soldiers under the British Mandate.
Singer, who is also on the Board of Directors of the United Jewish Council of the East Side, said, “With the increasing search by Jewish youth for self-awareness, identity and roots, it is imperative to preserve a monument such as the Hall of Heroism which recalls the legacy and the martyrdom of such Jewish heroes as Zev Jabotinsky, Dov Gruner, Moshe Barzani, Meir Feinstein and many more fighters in the war of liberation that helped to establish Israel.” Singer said that Chana Guzman, the curator of the museum, plans to include in the Hall of Heroism martyrs and heroes throughout Jewish history.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
