The Board of Deputies of British Jews, Anglo – Jewry’s representative body, has urged the British government to provide “immediate and active aid” for the Vietnamese boat people. MP Greville Janner, the Board’s president, recalled the Jews who perished in the death ships fleeing from Nazi-held Europe and said the British government should act in a compassionate and generous manner.
The Board, which also urged the Jewish community to contribute funds for the boat people, associated itself with similar calls by leading religious organizations in Britain. However, racist organizations, led by the National Front, have held demonstrations to oppose the entry of the refugees into Britain.
