Israel and Nicaragua will continue to maintain full diplomatic relations, according to an exchange of messages between the two governments over the weekend.

The future of diplomatic relations between Israel and Nicaragua was questioned following reports from Nicaragua that Israel had supplied military weapons to the regime of President Anastasio Somoza Debayle. However, several weeks ago Israel said it had ceased supplying the Somoza regime with arms at an early stage of the Sandinista revolution and had even ordered a ship laden with arms to return to Israel although the arms had been paid for by the Nicaraguan government.

Meanwhile, it was reported that a delegation representing the new Nicaraguan government met last week with Palestine Liberation Organization chief Yasir Arafat in Beirut. There had been reports during the Sandinista revolt against Somoza that the PLO had supplied the rebels with arms.
