Finance Minister Yigal Hurwitz, declaring that Israel’s defense budget is too heavy a burden for the nation to bear, said yesterday that he will demand a reassessment of defense spending because any reductions would make a significant contribution to the improvement of the economy.

According to Hurwitz, who appeared on a television interview, the relative calm along Israel’s borders and the fact that Iraq is tied down by its war with Iran are factors that should be taken into consideration in order to ease the grip of security on Israel’s economy. He said the reassessment of defense spending should be undertaken by various bodies in addition to the defense and finance ministries. He stressed that he was not proposing on “election year budget.”
