Begin Sends Condolences to Sadat over Death of Badawi

Premier Menachem Begin sent his “deepest condolences” to President Anwar Sadat over the death of Egypt’s Defense Minister Ahmed Badawi in a helicopter accident yesterday. Thirteen other high ranking officers perished in the mishap. Begin cabled the Egyptian President yesterday that he prayed to God to console the bereaved families and the Egyptian people in their grief. The Egyptian Embassy in Tel Aviv has received numerous condolence calls from Israeli officials both within and outside of the the defense establishment. According to reports from Cairo, Badawi, 53, and the 13 others were killed while on the way to watch army exercises in Egypt’s western desert. Badawi, who was named Defense Minister last May, commanded the Egyptian Third Army during the Yom Kippur War.
