Scholarships ranging from 400 to 3,200 Shekels have been given to 349 Jerusalem high school and vocational school students from poor families for lessons, books, clothing and other school expenses in the coming academic year.

The money is from the Mrs. Walter Rothschild Scholarship Fund which annually provides $25,000 for this purpose. The fund is administered jointly by the Joint Distribution Committee in Israel and the Israel Association of Community Centers. Mrs. Rothschild, who lives in New York, takes a keen and active interest in the allocations and the recipients.

One example of the kind of youngsters the fund helps is Ruth, an 11th grader, the oldest of five children whose mother died of cancer and whose father became mentally ill. In spite of her domestic burdens, Ruth’s school marks are good, partly through three years of tutoring paid for by the scholarship fund.

Another example is Hagit, the seventh of 10 children. None of her older siblings completed high school or has a viable job. Last year she received a Rothschild scholarship for books, school clothes and tutoring. Now Hagit is improving at school and also finding time to help her younger brothers. She told the local community worker: “I want to make sure my younger brothers get school diplomas and learn a skilled trade.”
