More than half the Druze on the Golan Heights who received Israeli identity cards have handed them back to the authorities or to village leaders who will return them collectively, Druze sources there said today. They said the cards were “forced on them.” Israeli officials and army officers denied any force was used.
Meanwhile, support for the Golan Heights Druze, now in the eighth week of a gener al strike protesting Israel’s annexation of the territory, appeared to be mounting among Israeli Druze in Galilee and the Mt. Carmel areas. Until now, Israeli Druze were considered completely loyal to the State. Many serve in the army and the border police.
