Police Warn Israelis to Be on Alert for Terrorist Attempts

Police have warned the public to be on the alert for terrorist attempts, either in the form of explosive charges left in public places or direct attacks, following the grenade attack on a bus in Tel Aviv which injured 12 people on Saturday night. The extremist Palestinian Abu Nidal group has claimed responsibility for the attack, according to a London Arabic-language newspaper.

Three of the injured remain hospitalized for treatment, but all the others have been released. Police say that 19 Arabs remain under detention and their interrogation continues for possible implication in the attack. All live or work in the vicinity of the attack. Those who live there do so in abandoned or dilapidated buildings and reside in Tel Aviv illegally.

Security forces say the attack was not unexpected, pointing to frequent police appeals for alertness. They say that dozens of terrorist attempts have been made in the Tel Aviv area in recent months. Few were successful, and their occurrence has been played down to avoid panic,
