An Israeli soldier was killed yesterday and another was wounded when two army vehicles came under small arms fire from an ambush in the Dier-el-Kamar region of the Shouf mountains in Lebanon. The attack brought the number of Israeli casualties since the war in Lebanon began last June to more than 470 killed and about 2,600 wounded.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister Moshe Arens paid a visit today to Maj, Saad Haddad at the latter’s home in Marjayoun in south Lebanon to discuss “matters of mutual interest,” according to aides, Arens was accompanied by the incoming Chief of Staff, Gen. Moshe Levi and Gen. Amir Drori, commander of the northern region. Haddad’s Christian militia put on a military display for the visitors.

Haddad reportedly told Arens he was stepping up his recruitment drive for the militia which Israel insists must control security in south Lebanon after Israeli forces are withdrawn.
