Defense Minister Moshe Arens said tonight that he has warned Jewish settlers in and around Hebron not to take the law into their own hands.
Addressing an audience in Haifa, the Defense Minister said he had made it clear to the settlers that they must set an example of order, discipline and loyalty to the State. He expressed the hope that the sacking and burning of the Arab marketplace in Hebron last Thursday night, after the murder of yeshiva student Aharon Gross by Arabs, was an isolated act perpetrated by a minority of Jewish militants.
Arens said that while the destruction of property could not be equated with murder, it was nevertheless an illegal act. “We will do everything in our power to prevent such acts in the future and to locate those responsible,” he said.
