Oxfam America has taken issue with two statements that appeared in an August 22 Bulletin article titled The Fight Against Hunger. According to an Oxfam spokesman, Harvard students who had bicycled across the country to collect money for Oxfam self-help programs raised $80,000, not $700,000 as reported. Also, Oxfam said that contrary to a statement in the article, the organization’s programs are not largely designed on Israeli and American technology.

“We fund programs that are designed by indigenous, grassroots organizations who are in the best position to know what they need to feed themselves and move towards economic self-reliance, “an Oxfam spokesman said. “We do not design programs based on available technology. Rather, we fund programs that have been created at the local level, with locally available resources whenever possible.”
