UN Chief to Visit Mideast

Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar, who is scheduled to visit the Middle East beginning June 3, said today that after two-and-a-half years as head of the UN, “I thought it will be indispensable for me to visit the Middle East.” He said the UN has a special responsibility regarding this area.

The Secretary General, who spoke at a luncheon sponsored by the UN Correspondents Association, said that his visit will include five countries: Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Israel. He said that his trip will be a “combination of a working and protocolary visit.” Regarding the situation in the Persian Gulf, he said he is “extremely concerned.” He said that the problem there is extremely serious, with the risk that the conflict may expand.
