Israel has had no official notice from the Lebanese government of the possible closure of the Israeli liaison office maintained in a northern suburb of Beirut, the Cabinet was informed today by Uri Lubrani the coordinator of Israeli affairs in Lebanon.

The Cabinet decided to discuss the issue only if and when an official request is made by the Lebanese authorities to shut down the office. According to Lubrani, the Lebanese have a greater interest than Israel in keeping the office open because it is the only channel of communications between the two countries.

He noted that Israel has stressed to the Beirut government that the issue of Israel’s continued presence in south Lebanon can be resolved only through direct negotiations.
