Jerusalem Mayor Teddy Kollek denied that he objected to the moving of the United States Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Sol Linowitz, former U.S. autonomy negotiator, was reported recently to have quoted Kollek as being opposed to the move, because it would embarrass President Reagan.

However, in a cable to Linowitz, Kollek stressed that Jerusalem was the capital of Israel and it was too bad that the American Embassy had not been moved there many years ago. Kollek said he did not believe that giving in to Arab demands would improve the standing of either the U.S. or Israel.

Linowitz replied to Kollek that he was misquoted and that he was well aware of Kollek’s position on the status of Jerusalem for many years.
