A 38-year-old reserve sergeant in the Israel Defense Force was killed in Lebanon early this morning when the armored personnel carrier in which he was travelling overturned during a search for terrorists on the eastern sector near Amik village. The sergeant was not immediately identified.
In related incidents, an IDF soldier was slightly wounded in south Lebanon today when an explosive charge went off and a rocket propelled grenade was fired at an IDF patrol near Nabatiya. Shortly afterwards, light arms fire was directed at a South Lebanese Army (SLA) patrol in Nabatiya.
Meanwhile, traffic between south and north Lebanon remained halted today with the bridge over the Awali River, north of Jezzine closed for the third consecutive day. The bridge was to have opened today after being shut down by the IDF for implementation of new security arrangements to prevent smuggling of terrorist materials into Israeli-controlled south Lebanon.
The new security measures included the construction of a “terminal” similar to those at the Jordan River bridges between Jordan and the West Bank, at which travellers are completely checked and cargoes off-loaded from vehicles at one end and re-loaded onto others at the other end. The IDF said this morning that arrangements had not been completed and the crossing would remain closed for a few more days.
