Egypt Bars Israel from 1986 Book Fair

Israel will not be allowed to participate in the 1986 international book fair in Cairo next January. Egyptian Culture Minister Ahmed Heikeal was quoted by the state-owned Middle East News Agency as saying that his ministry “has rejected an Israeli request for participation in the fair.”

Heikal gave no reason, but his statement came after Egypt’s denunciation of Israel’s air attack last Tuesday on PLO headquarters in Tunisia. Israel was allowed to participate in this year’s fair after it withdrew its troops from Lebanon. It was barred from the fairs in 1983 and 1984 as a protest by Egypt to Israel’s invasion of Lebanon in 1982.
