Anti-apartheid Protest in Tel Aviv

Several hundred people, many of them wearing black masks, marched from City Hall to the South African Embassy yesterday to protest against apartheid. The demonstration was organized by Abie Nathan, who operates the ” Voice of Peace” radio ship just outside Israeli territorial waters.

Nathan presented the South African Ambassador with a letter condemning apartheid and urging the Pretoria government to negotiate with the African National Congress. Nathan went to Ben Gurion Airport this morning where, according to reports, Israel’s new Ambassador to South Africa, David Ariel, was about to leave for his post. The Foreign Ministry would not confirm the reports.

His departure for Pretoria had been delayed for several weeks at the urging of many Israelis who feel Israel’s Embassy in the South African capital can well be left without an ambassador for the time being to stress the nation’s abhorrence of apartheid.
