The State Department said today that it would ‘welcome” a meeting between Israeli Premier Shimon Peres and King Hassan of Morocco or any other Arab leader. Department deputy spokesman Charles Redman said the United States had not been informed about Peres’ request to meet with Hassan in the King’s capacity as chairman of the Arab League.

“We have encouraged and of course we welcome any development which broadens Arab-Israeli contacts and advances the prospects for peace in the Middle East,” Redman said.

Hassan, in a television interview with French reporters, said that if Peres “has some serious proposals to make, he should come to see me.” Peres was reported as saying, “there were exchanges of messages between the King and myself, and I will be happy to meet with him.”
