The Polish Foreign Ministry in Warsaw issued a statement late yesterday afternoon asserting that Marek Edelman, one of the leaders of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, has not been allowed to emigrate to France, but has been granted only a visa to visit his family for 28 days in France, according to the World Jewish Congress office here.
The 64-year-old Edelman, who helped organize and lead the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, was also arrested in 1981 for his activities on behalf of the outlawed Solidarity trade union. His wife left Poland several years ago, and has since been living unobtrusively in France.
