The Foreign Ministers of the 12 European Economic Community (EEC) member-states, announced at a meeting in Heemskerk that the EEC will no longer take any initiatives to find a peace plan for the Middle East.
The decision followed a report by Dutch Foreign Minister Hans Van Den Broek, current chairman of the EEC Council of Ministers, on his recent foctfinding visit to the Middle East. It appeared to have been prompted by Syria’s negative attitude toward any initiatives by the European countries.
Van Den Broek visited Egypt and Jordan in addition to Syria. Last month he visited Arab League headquarters in Tunisia where he also met with Palestine Liberation Organization chief Yasir Arafat. He returned from his trip pessimistic over prospects for Middle East peace.
